in indiana, 14 in kentucky, 2 in ohio. this is the second round of killer tornadoes just this week. we have new pictures of a tornado bearing down on henryville, indiana, chewing up everything in its path. >> the number of casualties expected to rise, unfortunately. we have an entire team covering this massive wave of storms. we begin with ginger zee in the hard-hit town of henryville, indiana. good morning, ginger. >> reporter: good morning, bianna. 95 tornadoes ripped through yesterday. if they're all confirmed reports, this would be the greatest tornado day, one-day event in march for all history that we have in weather. numbers, though, don't matter at this point when you start talking to people. the sun coming up and the scene revealed. it's simply unbelievable. in southern indiana, it was a wave of vicious tornadoes. >> i looked up, i seen debris everywhere. next thing i knew, i was like, i thought it was a dream. >> reporter: within minutes, they were gone. this is what they left behind. neighborhood after neighborhood flattened. here in henryville, the small town

day of dangerous weather in ohio and the tennessee valley. much of indiana, missouri, kentucky are in danger. there has been a tornado emergency reported in madison county. we have live pictures of a menacing sky. the national and louisville. let's bring in chad myers at the cnn atlanta center. what is the latest? >> it goes all the way from illinois all the way down to georgia, alabama, as far west as louisiana and far north as virginia. on the backside, it's snowing up in squad cities. that's not atypical. you need cold air to clash. a couple areas still on the ground, to the north of chattanooga by bradley and north of cleveland in tennessee. and then another couple storms here popping up, not that far from cape girardo. that is harrisburg, illinois. right in the middle of a new tornado watch. that town that got hit so hard a couple of days ago. all of this area is under severe weather today. there will be a severe thunderstorm watch, tornado watch, and many warnings going through the night and probably into 10:00, 11:00 tonight. >> that means, keep it tuned here to cnn. cha

of the hardest hit areas. friday's storms killed at least 39 people across five states. parts of southern indiana and kentucky were just devastated. 21 people died in kentucky where the governor has asked for federal assistance. terrell brown is in henryville, indiana with the latest. good morning, terrell. >> betty, good morning to you. it was the unseasonably warm air that triggered these deadly storms causing damage that you see here like this. would you believe three days later, snow is falling across the same region and their timing couldn't be any worse as thousands here don't have power. people in henryville, indiana, are working together distributing water and sifting through donated supplies, food and clothing as they start to rebuild their lives. >> we're a tight knit place and we pull together when tragedy. >> two tornadoes hit henryville friday. one of them packed winds in excess of 165 miles per hour. the cleanup is under way, but it's going to take time and henryville school officials are trying to figure out how they'll finish the rest of the year. the elementary, middle and high s

troops have been deployed to the hardest-hit states of kentucky, indiana and missouri. jacqui jeras is here with me in the weather center keeping a close watch on all of this. let's talk about what concentrated areas are kind of in the bull's-eye, so to speak right now. florida among them. >> north florida and southern parts of georgia. it's really this squall line we are looking at right here that has the most potential for producing tornadic storms. right now there are no tornado warnings that are in effect. some of those thunderstorms could produce wind damage in excess of 60 miles per hour. sometimes those real down burst winds can cause as much damage as a tornado. you still need to stay indoors. another place that we are watching that's included in this tornado threat is jacksonville, florida. there you can see a live picture from jacksonville at this time. it's extremely windy. that's why you see all that crazy shaking going on on the camera there. 86 degrees. it's a very warm, very moist, ripe atmosphere. as that cold front starts to come on down and move into the region, th

that stretch from the gulf coast all the way up to the great lakes. this is pekin, indiana, ten miles northwest of louisville, kentucky. the police tell us this tornado caused extensive damage there. this is henryville, indiana, population 1,900. homes and businesses have been platenned. the same thing happened in nearby mariesville. a police officer there says the village is "completely gone. at least three people have been killed in southern indiana. the storms are massive, as we saw in downtown nashville. this is 11 minutes of video that we compressed to show you how the storm hit music city. the emotions of this evening were caught in this picture of one survivor in alabama after he found the one possession that he may have wanted to save the most. there were also reports of tornadoes across northern alabama. one ripped part of the roof off a maximum security prison. mark strassmann is in the town of new market tonight. mark? >> reporter: by mid-morning, scott, this house had been flattened. the good news is no one was home. and you see storm ruin just like this all over this neighborhood.

up to kentucky and indiana to the hardest hit communities. you can see tornado in tennessee. dozens of people were injured in the storms. we are watching all angles of the story this morning. susan c susan is in ohio. rob is in tennessee where we have seen significant damage. bonnie schneider is standing by in the severe weather center. the damage we have seen have been small towns like henriville. how bad is it? >> reporter: it is very bad. crushing damage. people here are reeling from what happened to the area. 15 deaths confirmed so far in the entire state of kentucky. a couple of them here in clark county. just to give you an idea, look at this school bus, it was flown here from across the street where the high school is located in henriville. here is the front of the bus you are seeing and the back behind it. the chassis of the bus is resting this way. bus this way, chassis off to the side. it's an indication of how powerful the storms are. a number of us are lined up here, so i can't walk too, too much. as you look up in this direction, giving you a look at some of the power l

through a dozen states. officials now say 37 people have been killed. 20 in kentucky, 12 in indiana. 3 in ohio and one each in alabama and georgia. and the national weather service says that the four tornadoes that hit kentucky were the worst in the region in some 24 years. this evening, we are hearing that the 2-year-old who z what found alive about 150 yards from her indiana home has died. we are in one of the hardest hit areas in indiana. >> reporter: sunday services at churches across the area were emotional. the church goers wiped away tears and hugged one another. >> what we're hearing is people who have lost everything, they are showing up to help their neighbors and friends and family. so i don't believe that there will be a loss. there is hope renewed. >> reporter: the nurse drove five hours from chicago to help. she went door to door checking on residents like june who said in the middle of the devastation, she feels blessed. >> look around you. there is a lot left. there is a lot left. >> reporter: the sheriff deputy delivered bottles of water. he helped people take shelter.

of indiana. this henriville, indiana located 20 miles north of louisville, kentucky. this is henriville junior/senior high school struck by a tornado. that school demolished completely. there were people trapped in the high school for a time period. now i believe only one person is still not being found in that high school. the school was actually in dismissal at that time. you can see now the chopper is flying over some open land right now, not exactly over the henriville area but maryville just up the road the sheriff's office says that town is completely off the map, a town of 1900 people. don't know of any deaths in maryville but every building gone. this is why, look at these very strong storms, all across the region from portions of ohio around cincinnati all the way down toward the gulf coast states. we're talking about mississippi, alabama, and in through portions of georgia. take a look at the current colors. when i say the current colors i mean the yellows, the tornado watches. it includes parts if not half of west virginia right now. southern portions of ohio all the way down

boxes. indiana, ohio, down south to northern georgia, even western north carolina and south carolina. those little boxes of red are tornado warnings. that is where right now there are a lot of reports of tornadoes actually on the ground. we're seeing a lot of damage out of henriville, indiana. reports of a high school severely damaged, and another tornado moving into the area right now. that's a big hot spot and half a dozen reports of tornadoes right around the border there of kentucky and indiana and another zone that's firing just a little farther down to the south. again, all part of the same system that is going to be headed this way. for us the heavy rain. you see it right there. that's the line just south and west of cincinnati, ohio. so cincinnati likely to begin a tornado warning very soon, too. heavy rain, fredericksburg, headed to the north and east up into st. mary's county, calvert county, moderate rain around warranton so a sloppy afternoon and evening rush for us. we're at 49 degrees with a southeast wind at 9 miles per hour. we'll have temperatures dropping to about 5

news. the second tornado outbreak this week. cameras captured this apparent twister in borden, indiana, late friday and this morning. nbc news is confirming at least 32 deaths in three states. the storms moved east overnight in charlotte, north carolina. the severe weather destroyed homes and damaged others and some brand new video shows several dozen trees laying on the ground and debris littering that ground there. many parts of tennessee were affected from the city of ottawa. we just received this video showing damage filling the street and stuck with trees. many homes lost parts of their roof, but most devastation is in southern indiana. this in the town of henriville and we're getting a good look at the damage and entire homes are ripped from their foundations and are surrounded by dozens of downed trees. the most dramatic image may be the school busses tossed around like toys. children escaped to safety just moments before the storm struck. those who survived are stunned at the destruction, but they do remain hopeful. here's what they told lester holt. >> i put her in the basemen

zone. >> it's hard to believe that harsh winter weather is hitting henryville, indiana after summer-like killer tornadoes tore through the area. abc's ginger zee is there. good morning, ginger. >> reporter: good morning, rob and paula. yesterday we flew over the tornadic annihilation. we've seen a lot of images like this on the ground. but to see it from above was something completely different. when you see all of the homes wiped from their foundation, you see the trees that have been snapped and plucked from that huge tornado, and really when you fly above it it gives you that width or that breadth that it covered, at times a half a mile, this ef 4 monster had winds of 175 miles per hour. and boy, could you see it from up there in that chopper. so we went over not only the town of pekan, where poor baby angel at this time we found was taken off life support. and that was that one family who now was altogether taken from that tornado. but in pekan the tornado then moves to henryville. from there to marysville, where one church stands alone. so many stories of lucky survival because

in indiana where the girl was found. susan, so sad to hear this news. you have gotten a chance and you have spoken exclusively to the man who found her as we were getting this sad information. >> reporter: it is, indeed, so sad, especially because this really is a case and a story that captured everyone's heart. i think everyone that had heard about this family and little angel had been pulling for her at least to be, as you said, a symbol of hope, of survival. but now it appears that her injuries were just too much for that little one to overcome, and the family made a very difficult decision quite clearly. but i'm standing here, don, in the debris field, the aftermath of that tornado where it all happened. this twister when it came in on friday hit a field behind me. you can see where mainly mobile homes were located and the babcock family lived there, a family of five. a husband, a father and mother, ages 20, 21, and their three children. and a neighbor by the name of jason miller had convinced them to come hofover from their smal trailer to his double wide to take shelter. they hunkered
